I love embroidery. Love it. I have lots of embroidery thread. I have DMC and Cosmo Floss, Finca Perle Cotton balls, Valdani wool balls, and some large decorative threads. Here's the dilemma: how in the world to organize it all. And how to carry it with you when you travel.
Do you have a favorite method? A favorite carrier? I'm going to be away from home for a couple of months and I want to take it all with me. Am I dreaming? (Images found on Google Images)
For my DMC I used a fishing tackle box. I wrapped the floss around holders put the number on front of the holder and had different sections of numbers for the floss. This worked for me. For the finca I would just have them in a storage container box. Hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteDepending on how much space you have, I prefer an Art Bin. they have many sizes + styles. And, IMO, can take travel without opening up and spilling.
ReplyDeleteDepending on how much needlework time you have, might be easier to just pick a project or two with the 'ingredients' and pack the 'tools' in a small case.
I also like the battery OTT light. Easy to travel with.
DMC sells a little notebook that stores your floss. You might look into that.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if you could use snack sized zip-loc bags and put a grommet through the bottom so they could be put on a ring?
I keep my floss on the DMC paper floss cards in divided plastic floss containers with lids. http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewscrappyquilts/7256679486/in/photostream
ReplyDeleteI got them on sale at Joann with the cards inside for $1.00 each.
I haven't purchased large balls of perle cotton yet, just the hanks. I purchased a metal ring holder with plastic cards and I have the colors I'm using on there.

The extras are in Ziploc bags.
For the DMC floss I like the plastic cards you wind it on. I think the others have given you some great suggestions for the rest of it.
ReplyDeleteWonderful threads...well...I am ashamed to tell you that I just take what I need and leave the rest behind but it looks like since you will be gone a while you will need a great method to store it.
ReplyDeleteI think all I have ever done is put the project and thread into the same zippy bag, or perhaps a nice fabric zipper pouch....I don't guess that helps much!
ReplyDeleteIt's fun to hear what others do. After embroidering lots of cat faces, I sorted my thread hanks (or whatever they may be called) into a plastic container. The threads that had been cut and used partly ... with one to five strands left, I put in a jar so I cn look there first for what I need withour cutting more.
ReplyDeleteWhen you figure it out tell us!!!! I just have my stuff in different bags to carry. I have a crocheting bag, embroidery bag, etc. The thing is lately I don't get to too much of it!!! lol
ReplyDeleteGrab a JoAnn's coupon and go to the floss area to buy a couple packages of floss storage bags. They work great. Be sure to buy several rings so you can organize them, and carry only the ones you'll actually use.
ReplyDeleteI have no solution. If you saw my embroidery floss mess that I have, you would turn and run. I have the little card boards to wind them on but have never done it. And the plastic containers to store them in. I hope you come up with something really good for storage.
ReplyDeleteYou do love floss!!!
ReplyDeleteI bet your home is so full of your lovely creations.
How to store??? No clue, but there sure are some great ideas on the comments. Be sure and share what you end up doing!
Don't you just love thread and all the colors. I just get a pleasure out of looking at them. Like most of the others, I wind my floss on the holders and number the holder with the dye number. I like the plastic containers made for holding the cards.
ReplyDeleteI keep the balls in a separate plastic container.
Your trip looked like so much fun and hey, you clean up really nice :)
I use the clear plastic travel boxes that little boys use for their Matchbox cars! They're made by Plano Molding. Have a handle and they snap shut. It's a two-layer box - with two tops - should hold everything! I actually have 8full of sewing thread!
ReplyDeletemmm plastic bags always works for me..I color code them, and as you see through them...it is easy to find.
ReplyDeletehope all these suggestions work..
I tote all my yarn in plastic boxes that have dividers in them. I began by using those specifically for floss, but have found other cheaper boxes with adjustable dividers ( Maybe for fishing tackle?). Floss is wrapped around plastic or cardboard holders and stored numerically in the dividers. When I hit the road the boxes fit nicely stacked in one of the shopping bags you gave me. I think I'm up to 5 boxes. Wrapping the floss onto the little holders and tucked neatly into the boxes takes quite a bit of time, but is oh, so satisfying to the OCD.
ReplyDeleteIf you want to carry everything including your scissors and thread conditioners and needles and hoops and fabrics and instructions along with the floss and balls of thread, there are tool boxes on rollers (like those yellow/black ones) that could probably handle all of it. Or those "cropper hoppers" (also on wheels) that are sold at scrapbook stores.
ReplyDeleteI have my floss all organized in 9 by 13 inch cake totes I got at Wal-Mart. They were $5 each when I got them, and they work great! :0)
