I know some of you bird people out there will recognize this bird...but I don't. What kind is it? He/she had a grand old time eating suet outside my kitchen window Sunday.

Looks like a female "hairy woodpecker"...the male looks the same except it has a small red patch on the top of hit head.

Great photos. Amelia is right. I have a couple that come to my suet feeder.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was the Downy but maybe Amelia is right. The Hairy has a longer bill and coarser feathers. I've had them on my suet all winter.

The hairy is about 9 1/2 inches, quite a large beak and the downy is about 6 1/2 inches, also on tail outer feathers some spots.. Love watching them and they love suet..

Hi, Marlene! It was probably a Downy.They're the smallest of our woodpeckers and a reduced size of its cousin, the Hairy. Generally speaking, the Downy frequents bird feeders and knows how to tap into our kindness, whereas the Hairy would rather tough it out in the woods, pecking for insects and making holes larger.

I love to see birds. We love our feeder. Our birds are spoiled to black sunflower seeds. They love them.

ReplyDeleteYes, I also agree, it is the downy... we have downy's, hairy's and a red-bellied... it is so much fun watching all the birds in the yard!
