Rode Hard and Hung Up Wet

Have you ever heard that saying? I think it refers to the old west, or maybe even now, when men rode through bad weather and then didn't clean up their leather stuff when they got home. We've adapted that phrase to mean lots of other things but in this case I mean me! For the second time in a month I've had the stomach virus. That explains why I didn't feel right this week - I told you a couple of days ago I just wasn't myself and I was right. I woke up Wednesday night about 1:00 a.m. with diarrhea. Yuck. That's bad enough but about 3:00 I started throwing up. Doggone it, this is not fair! No one should have this stuff more than once a season. It lasted about 12 hours and then I just laid in the bed like a zombie. My poor husband had to take care of me and clean up after me. He told me he'd gladly trade cleaning up if he didn't have to get it. I would have made that trade too!

Today my body hurts all over but I'm determined to be up and moving. Surely the aches are from being in the bed too long. Surely. I'm also thinking I might eat today. Something. Anything! I did have a few crackers and some 7UP last night so I think it will be ok. I'm trying hard to find something funny to say for this post but it just isn't there. :) I will tell you about a blessing though. Yesterday afternoon laying in the bed I could look out my window and see the beautiful sunshine and the lake glistening like diamonds. A bird came and sat on the shrub right outside and serenaded me for over an hour. I have no idea what kind it was but since it sang so many different songs I'm thinking mockingbird. I hope it's nesting there. Whenever a bird visits me like that I think of Mother - she loved them so.

  2. Marlene, I'm so sorry, my son had that and it's no picnic! He's single and lives alone so I spent the night with him during the worst of it. We were so afraid he'd dehydrate since he couldn't keep anything down. It took a few days to get over it, but he did.

The bird story reminds me of the song, Wings of a Dove. Do you remember that? Perhaps your little visitor was a sign from God that everything will be alright.

  3. Oh, Marlene. I do hope you are feeling much better today. I agree with Milah. Surely God wanted to make you feel better so he sent a bird to serenade you.

Have a wonderful, feel better, weekend! Michelle

  5. Not fair at all. Touch wood, I hardly ever get these sort of things. Even when I was at work and everyone else would be falling like flies there I would be being unbearably cheerful! My immune system was a sight to behold!

Get well soon, my dear, and I hope hubby's trade-in worked!

  6. Oh crud! Hope your are back up and 'normal' very soon.

My phrase to describe that yuckiness is "felt like I was run over by a sugar beet truck" ..

Rest up, drink lots of water, etc. It's OK to rest. 8-)))

  7. Marlene! I'm so sorry you are under the weather (and that doesn't mean clouds!) Must have come from Chuckie Cheese! Bad stuff! (both the illness and CC!) Hope you are on the mend, now! Miss your cheery notes and posts so much. You are such a bright spot in our days!

  8. I sure hope you get to feeling better. My mother loved her mockingbirds too. We had one that used to sit on the tv antenna(remember those) and sing it's heart out.

  15. I am so sorry you have had the awful punies. Love your husband's deal.
The mockingbird in full song is wonderful to hear. I have been blessed on occasion.
Be well and feeling 100% soon.

  16. Yuck! Sounds like you need rest, even if you want to be up and moving. I usually vote for a healthy dose of fast food after a stomach bug. Show that stomach who's boss! :)

  17. A Mockingbird sings like that when attracting a mate. Once they mate, they do not sing until the babies have fledged. We've had a Mockingbird on our suet feeder all winter. Just in the last weeks, there have been two and they aren't singing.
The phrase applied to the horse, also, because a horse road fast and long distance became lathered. Wet with sweat. Not rubbing the horse down to dry it, could cause illness and the horse wouldn't be available the next time it was needed.
I have used this expression myself and know exactly how you feel.
Praise for wonderful husbands who take care of us so well when necessary. Mine has had to do that a couple of times when I didn't think I would live through, whatever.
I'm happy you're up today and feeling a little better. Don't over do.

  18. Hi, Marlene....I'm sorry you're sick again. That's not fair.!!! You missed a good quilting class today. My cowboy husband would say "rode hard and put away wet" refers to the horse after a long day of riding and must be washed and dried off before they can be put in their stall. Jo

  19. Oh Marlene, I had that a while back. Not fun but from experience, rest. Rest and more rest until you feel stronger. We apply the saying to lots of things, mostly tack that is in bad shape.

  20. My friend got that virus while we were at the Mid-Atlantic quilt show. I had to rent a car to drive her home and we were having to stop every 40 minutes or so. It is really rough and I hope you are feeling better now.
