Someone asked me this week why I planted herbs...if I cooked with them. And the answer is - I don't know. Yes, I cook with them but only a little. I love basil and oregano and cilantro for pesto but I never seem to have enough to make any. I like rosemary with chicken and parsley in almost everything. I guess it's really two things that draw me to herbs. First it's the scents - some are sweet and some are pungent and some are sharp and some are spicy. I love it when the breeze blows across them and I catch a promise of their smell up on the deck. But mostly I think it's God. I see Him there - His wisdom puts me in awe. He made the seeds, he causes them to grow and He makes them pleasant to our taste and to our noses. He made them for us to enjoy - gifts because He loves us. I see a garden and I am reminded of that Love
Yes, he had wisdom when he made the plants. You know there is a remedy for almost everything in plants. They were used for many years before mad made medicines came along. I also love their sweet fragrances.
ReplyDeleteI love herbs, too. Even better than flowers. I don't cook with them as much as I should, but I love just walking out there and looking at them, running my fingers over them and smelling all those good scents!
ReplyDeleteI wish I knew how to cook with herbs!! I use Italian herbs in Italian dishes and a little parsley but other than that I am lost! Maybe you should share some recipes!! ;-))))
ReplyDeleteI do use herbs in my cooking - and may I just say to Julie that you don't need any know-how to use them - but I have frequently made table or windowsill decorations using only herbs. The beautiful chives flowers even look good just on their own in a little vase on the table with perhaps a sprig of rosemary to set them off.
ReplyDeleteHerbs are lovely plants and do smell good. I love the smell of Basil and don't get me started on how great Lemon Balm is. We don't need to eat a rose to appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteI planted herbs (cilantro, basil, parsley & chives)in a container(a big metal washtub) this year for the first time. I'm hopeful they'll turn out. I can't wait to walk out and snip a little as I need them.
ReplyDeleteI have never planted too many herbs but when I did that is what I loved too......the smell. Your herbs are beautiful. I haven't been here in a while so I am gonna catch up on your posts.
ReplyDeleteI always have enough for pesto...and I have a trash can potato garden this year....am looking forward to my own new potatoes! But I'm with you on most of the herbs--cooking is great but the smell is fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI am an herb lover too. At one point in my life, I thought about growing & selling them for a living. I love them for their scent, their usefulness, and that many of them are perennials. Lavender is my signature flower, but there are many others I plant and enjoy as well.
ReplyDeleteherbs are great to grow regardless of whether or not you cook with them...they're pretty, they smell good, they're earthy, and on and on....if you cook with them, that's just another layer of cake and icing!
ReplyDeleteSeeing them, touching them, smelling them.....heavenly.
Just another set of blessings from our Father.
Now I want to plant some herbs! For me my raspberry patch is a place that I see the new life and promise of fruit in my life from the Lord.
