I'm about halfway through cleaning out and reorganizing my sewing room. Today I came across these two fat quarters:
My quilt guild retreat is the first week in April and I have to produce something from these two fat quarters plus any other fabrics I want to add. Good grief. I have no imagination. My brain is tired. I've had these since last April but I forgot. I should never have said I would. There's no possible way to put these two together. I need to sweep the porch. Really. Have I whined enough? :)
Taking all suggestions. Or maybe you want to volunteer to make it for me. Seriously. No, I'll do it if you'll just tell me what to do. Hurry!
Hot pad? Reversible tote bag? I posted about a new scrap pattern on my blog today but don't know if it would work for these two.. maybe if you fussy cut your pieces with only one color of flowers in them, they might turn out some cute scrap blocks. Come by and take a look if you want. I love that wild paisley print!
ReplyDeleteMug rugs? I would add several solids or tone on tones....see...I don't have much imagination either :)
ReplyDeleteWhat one color is the common denominator? None? Cut these two prints into squares and sash them with Kona white. Or, if there IS a common color, sash with white and use the common color as a solid, for cornerstones. Look! You've become a Modern Quilter and have a cute wall hanging!
ReplyDeleteI like what Linda said. But you could also make a lined zippered bag and use one for the outside and one for the inside and then use it for a travel cosmetic bag.
ReplyDeleteA wall hanging...Drunkard's Path Pattern. I had just typed Drunkard's Path and thought I'd better add pattern or some non-quilting people would think I was crazy!
ReplyDeleteFirst thing I thought of was some kind of reversible bag.
ReplyDeleteA placemat with one fabric on one side and the other on the back with a coordinating solid for the binding.
ReplyDeleteYellow and green seem to be a common denominator and white or black always adds something. Don't forget to look at the back side of the fabric too! The blue fabric looks like a border fabric to me and then fussy cutting some of the other fabric could make it coordinate. Can't wait to see what you do!
ReplyDeleteYikes! I hope some of the above great suggestions work for you -- it's too late (and I'm not all that creative myself) to come up with anything appropriate! Have fun! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know!
ReplyDeleteI'm only a fabric toucher.
I'm not the quilt whisperer.
BUT I do know that you will make something completely gorgeous!
Maybe a star quilt using one of the fabrics for the main part of the quilt. The other for a stop border. A light neutral for the background and repeat it for the last border.
ReplyDeleteYou could put a cute ruffle on a kitchen towel and then some kind of image on the towel....
ReplyDeleteI am such a traditional quilter and my brain was thinking about adding colors and making blocks but the idea of a reversable bag shocked me because it would be so easy with a machine!
ReplyDeleteThese fabrics definitely cry out to be a bag. Blue fabric on the outside, maybe with some orange or yellow solid looking fabric and the bright flowery fabric as a lining.
ReplyDeleteMake one of those 4-sided placemats. You know, the ones where you cut 4 FQs into ovals then sew them to each other just a half-side at a time, leaving an opening on the last 1/2 side sewn to turn all right side out, press and close the opening.
ReplyDeleteYou could add two solid-color fat-quarters or two more wildly-colored ones and make each side completely different.
Or you could make a little "gramma block" wall-hanging, like the one here: http://sewmesomethinggood.blogspot.com/2012/03/scrapbusting-with-granny.html
I would use a lime green polka dot to pull them together. What about using them to make some liberated stars or flowers? Easy, quick and alot of fun - Good Luck :)
ReplyDeleteI think I would use a litght limmey green solid to pull these two VERY DIFFERENT fabrics together! OH, I am currnetly in LOVE with this hexi table runner http://www.sewwequilt.com/2012/03/its-runner-month-with-jane-and-her.html and I think if you used green and yellow and some other solid, it would actually come together beautifully!! Plus I think it is a VERY quick project!! Oh, I can't wait to see what you choose to do!!!
ReplyDeleteI would grab a tea towel. Cut out angel wings out of the paisley print and have angel flying over the floral border. But a zip bag would work also.
ReplyDeletefirst thing that popped in my head...was HELP in the center and log cabin....small mini quilt...
ReplyDeletepsst not my fav combo...eek
sew HELP seems appropriate
The paisley reminds me of French Quimper ware. I think both fabrics are reminiscent of French country. My suggestion is probably way off the mark, but perhaps small squares paired with applique might work for a table topper. For inspiration, here's a free downloadable pattern I found:

As I stated, my idea and your fabrics might not work together at all, but I know you'll come up with something wonderful!
Maybe this will help - I put your photograph into this color palette generator & it gives common colors.

Maybe using one of these common colors as a background or connecting fabric will help.
I like the suggestion of using one fabric for ruffles. Maybe the blue could be the main color of a pillow with one or two of the colors from the color palette generator. Then use the green as a ruffle on the edge of the pillow. Add some fabric flowers made from the green too - to embellish & pull the second fabric onto the front of the pillow. Using the green print for ruffles & flowers would blur the pattern of the print but still bring out the colors - I hope that all makes sense.
I can't wait to see what you do!
If you have trouble with the link just do a search for color palette generator, cope & paste your photograph into it & it will load for you!
How about using them as applique butterfly wings...I think that would be beautiful...
ReplyDeleteI would find a solid or at least reads as a solid background, then cut a huge vase out of the paisley, applique or hot iron stitch which it o the background, add greens and leaves and flower cut outs of the floral !!! enjoy ...
ReplyDeleteWow! I think all of your commenters should do what they suggested and send photos for you to post! I really like the colors in both of them, and thought lime green would tie them together. Can't wait to see what you do!
ReplyDeleteI like Connie's suggestion of mug rugs...but then I am hung up on them right now, but I also think they would make a wonderful tote bag. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
ReplyDeleteOk I'm not sure how big or small you need to make something but this might be an idea that could give you some ideas. You just need to take a drive away from your beautiful lake over to the Mississippi River. LOL
ReplyDeleteConnie did a great tutorial for a handy project that I know is on my list of very soon to do's.
Here is the link to her tutorial

And here is a link to show others she's made since the tutorial

First thing I thought of was a reversible bag, but what do I know??? Heeehehehe!!!
ReplyDeleteGood luck girl, I know whatever ya come up with will be a winner!!!
God bless and have yourself a grand weekend!!! :o)
Good gracious! I have no idea, but sure can't wait to see what you come up with! I need sunglasses looking at those two together! hee, hee, hee.
ReplyDeleteI would add some solid blue and solid yellow fabric squares and make a crazy guilt. I make one where you take 9 squares and put them on top of each other and then cut one line through them. You rearrange the pieces, sew them together and make a second cut....etc...etc rearrange, sew ...cut and you end up with a crazy quilt that is fun and pleasing.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with whatever you decide to do. Hugs, Lura
Since time is limited SIMPLE and Easy
ReplyDeleteare two prime factors. You have some excellent suggestions. I like the idea of taking some simple tea towels and using the fabric for ruffles and applique.
You have to show what you came up with!
