Looking For Advice

I need a new table for cutting.  I'm considering this one from JoAnn's.  Does anyone have this and if so how do you like it?
I want one on rollers and I like the idea that this folds up.  But here's another caveat...I have an ironing board that is made from a hollow core door and I love the size of it.  It's "portable" meaning that I can lay it on top of the table to iron and then take it off when I want to cut.  I'm not sure what the top surface of this table is made of.  The frame is metal, but it doesn't say what the top is so I'm guessing fiberboard.

This table is 34 1/2" high - would that be a comfortable height?  I found another one exactly like it that is 36" high.  I'm 5'4" by the way.

Does anyone have a cutting table they love that isn't horribly expensive?

  1. I have one of these. The top is kind of like a formica, laminated top? It is smooth. I also have a cutting mat that I bought from Joann's that fits the top perfectly. (Actually, since I am host to our quilt group, I have about 6 of the mats, and I lay them across my double width banquet tables). It folds up to only the width of center piece, and I wheel into my double closet and it fits out of sight nicely. It is also slim enough to sit against a wall without taking up my space.

Would the 34 1/2" be comfortable for cutting? Sure! I'm 5'2". This table can be bought at Joann's with a 40% or 50% off coupon. Have you signed up for your teacher's discount? I have some girls in my group who use that all the time for extra discounts and you don't have to be a home ec teacher. One is a 5th grade teacher.

    Love it!

  2. I had this table for a time and I liked it. It can be a little top heavy, so just be careful.

Unfortunately mine lost a wheel (I had owned it a looooong time) and I finally got rid of it.

Not a bad little/big table at all!

  3. I have this table and I think its great. The height is good for me and I'm 5'6".
I have the ironing cover that you can get to go with it. It covers the entire table and turns the whole thing into an ironing surface. When not needed, the cover folds up and stores away.

  4. I used this table for years and liked it. Gifted it to a friend recently and she likes it. The fact that it folds up makes it really convienent.

  6. I had one for years and loved it...I find that about waist high is a good height for me, then I don't have to bend or stretch.

  7. yep I have one but it was an old table of not pine...a heavier wood but not oak...it is not coming to me..but it is 6 feet long and 3 feet wide...and David add 6 inches of wood to rise it the same height as my island..works perfectly and cost less than 2 dollars for the wood...I saw this table btw..it was rather unsteady lol ...if I can say that..

  8. When I'm cutting lts of stuff I get out my 6 ft table from Target and place 4 small paints under the legs to raise it a bit. I'm 5'4", too.

  9. Good morning! I have a banquet table...the kind you get at Sams that has 2 legs (with 2 "feet" on each one). I can put 3 cutting mats side by side on it. I went to Lowes and had them cut PVC pipe the length I needed to raise the table to the perfect height for me. I also put the caps on the end of the PVC so that it didn't scratch up the floor and then put the square thingies that keep furniture from moving underneath. It was cheap, is sturdy and the perfect height.

Thanks for the comment about the Rowena. I hope it lasts but I can tell a huge difference in quality! It has steam holes in the "nose", it has lots of the steam holes and it gets hotter. There is also more steam. I love it! I will really be bummed if it doesn't last a while.

Good luck with the table situation! Cheery wave from Bev

  10. I have this one in my small sewing room. It's great for cutting and I love the way it folds to open up my room when I don't need it!

  11. I've had one of thses for years and love it. I also have the cutting mat that fits it. I am 5'3" and the height is comfortable. Most of the time I keep one leaf folded down and use my 24x36" mat. I don't use it for ironing as my hubby made me a big board from luan plywood.....very light weight and easy to lift on and off the ironing board.

  12. I too lost a wheel on mine - It is an ok table but you can't store anything under it so you lose a lot of room. Don't know what the price is now, but if you have an IKEA take a look at this blog - http://sewmanyways.blogspot.com/2012/07/sew-sew-saturdaygreat-sewing-table.html

the table folds but has drawers for storage - this baby is on my christmas list - BTW - I don't fold mine out of the way - too much trouble.

  13. I've had this table for a number of yrs. and love it. I'm 5'2" and it's a great height. I love it because I can move it to locations with better light and when the sides are folded down, it will fit in a small space. Highly recommended using a % discount from JoAnn's.

  14. I too am 5'4 and I have this very table. It is parked in the garage and holds my painting supplies...For cutting I prefer the cutting table from Arrow Sewing Cabinets, much better ssuited for my sewing needs.

  15. I have had this table for a few years. While the size and height are great and I like that the cutting mat and matching ironing cover are convenient, the table itself is very shaky. I have tried it on carpeting, a wood floor and linoleum and it does not make it more stable.
I saw the Norden Ikea table and plan on buying it in the fall.

  16. I don't have one of these...so I really can't offer anything on it, except to say I wish I did and I hope you get a good one! I did want to tell you that this morning I blogged links for the book I gave away -- it's a freebie on Kindle today!! :)

  17. I have this table & mat that fits the whole top. I'm you height. It works great for me and have no complaints. When I use it, one end of it is next to a wall.

  18. I have always been told that a good cutting table height is 6" below your elbow(when you are standing with your arms by your side). THis is supposed to be the correct ergonomic height to prevent back strain. Hope this helps!

  20. I have to agree with the other comments. I have this table from JoAnn's and I love it. I am 5'2" and the height is good for me. My table is set up in the guest room, so when company comes, I can just close it up to the narrow strip and shove it next to the window. Mine is on carpet so it is very steady and doesn't move. I only have a regular cutting mat, so I shove that under one of the beds when I need to close the table.

  21. I don't know a thing about this table, but what I'm looking for is a used rolling kitchen cart. I'm keeping an eye on craigslist for one. Carts are 36" high, often have storage underneath (hate to waste space!), and are on wheels for easy mobility. I think you could put a board on top of a cart if the top isn't large enough. Just an idea for you. Also there's a nice kitchen island cart available through Target.

  22. My sister has one of these from Joan's and it's great. We put a cutting mat on top. It folds down on both sides and rolls so it can be used in a variety of settings. I am 5'8" and it's comfortable for me - at my house I use the pool table with a cutting mat on top which is wider but much more difficult for me to use, because it's lower. Since I don't spend a lot of time using it, it's OK, but I'd rather have this great table. We only used it on a hard surface, so I don't know how it performs on a carpet.

  23. I almost bought one of these a year ago but I found a really nice, bigger wood one on Craigslist for about the same money. Look for one of those, you won't regret it. And I am the same height and I have no problems at all.

  24. I also have this table and have used it for years. The only problem I have with it or the fold out legs when you open it up. There is no catch and they can swing further than you want or close up on you if you or moving the table around when it is open. All that said, I do like my table, and love that both sides fold down so that it can be more easily stored out of the way when not in use.

  25. If you are close to an Ikea they have two great cutting tables although not called as such..One is like a drafting table on what looks like saw horse legs the other one is a craft table with an attachement on it . I dont know if they have wheels..You can also purchase from them through catalog and online Ikea.com

  26. I have one of these tables I've had for years and I love it. I'm 5'3" and have had no problems. I didn't buy the cutting mat that fits over the table as I was told since it wasn't a self healing type it would dull the rotary blades faster. I use the largest Olfa mat on it. I also bought 2 metal kitchen type "bookshelves" that fit right under the table, one on either side of the middle support. They line up with the front and that makes for great storage.

  27. I have this table and love it. Make sure you buy it at JoAnn's -- not online. The one they sell online is not the same table and I've heard bad things about it!

  29. I've had this table for several years, no problems at all---I've also got the mat that fits the top, works great!

  30. I have this table but I am not a fan. It doesn't stay completely still and it won't handle anything too heavy. I contemplated taking the wheels off hoping for more stability, but I haven't done it yet. Right now it sits in my guest room as a skinny folded up knick nack table. I bought it to scrapbook with, but I didn't like it for that with all the funky legs underneath too.

  31. Can you stand another comment about tables? I have two 6-ft. long folding tables with that tough plastic top that I have standing side-by-side to make it wider not longer. I also have the legs standing on bedrisers. All were purchased at Walmart for a total cost of approx. $85.00 They are sturdy can be folded and put away taking up little space and making it more versatile than a heavy table. No rollers, but I would think having a table on rollers might not make the table very sturdy? I use my table for cutting out fabric for making clothing and for pin-basting quilts as well as cutting fabric pieces for quilts. I have a lot of space on the 2 tables. These are in the garage set up so I don't have to take them up and down very often. If you already purchased your table from JoAnn then I suppose my comment won't help you now. Of course you can return with a receipt. Thant's my 2 cents.
