See You In September and Orphan Blocks

What does one of these have to do with the other?  Nothing.  Or I guess it could be something.  There's a new blog hop happening over at Sew We Quilt called See You In September.

Shari from Refreshed Intent and Living with Purpose will be coordinating this hop so be sure you join in - it's going to be great fun!  I'm all ready - one of the requirements is to use some Riley Blake gingham for one of the three projects so here's what I'm going to use:

Hmmm, wonder what holiday I might be thinking about?  :)

Meanwhile I'm going to be taking a little trip, no a big trip, in the future and I wanted some bags to put my unmentionables in.  I know those airport folks see a million pairs of panties every day but these are MY panties and telling me they don't even think twice about underwear is like telling me not to be nervous about going to the gynecologist because they see lots of those private places every day.  Is it my age that makes me think private things should be private?  :)

I made a couple of unmentionable bags out of two fat quarters and some ribbon I had left from another project - these are even lined.  But then I thought to myself, "Self, you have tons of orphan blocks....what could you do with those?"  So I made these two, one lined and one unlined.

Before I'm through I'll have enough bags to hold every single thing in my suitcase.  But, really how many of these do I need?  I don't need a hundred so I'm on a quest ya'll.  What else can I do with orphan blocks?  Pot holders would be good but what else?  Got ideas?

  1. Book covers! Zippers pouches. Quilt backs!! I love me a pieced quilt back!! A row of orphan blocks down the back gives such character!!

  2. I'll add to Josie's list - table runners & mats, pillows, candle mats, armchair pin cushion with pockets (orphan blocks make up the pockets) - I do love the row of orphans down a back.

  3. I make bags and use them instead of wrapping Christmas presents in paper. Everyone loves them. Some give them back to me and I use them the next year. I have used Christmas Fabric but patchwork and all other kinds of fabric.

  9. Fabulous gingham. I love those cute buttons!

I like the idea of the unmentionables in the bags and those are darling bags - especially the patchwork one.

  10. Wonderful bags! I am with you....they may be used to seeing things, but mine are mine ;-). You could make an orphan sampler quilt for fun. It would be a visual record of your work!

  11. Unmentionable bags! Oh, I love it! You're so creative. I always use my orphan blocks in quilt backings, so I never have any around. But you could make an Edith Small Zipper bag with one. (See my tutorial!)

  14. Well, those look a lot fancier than the zip-lock bags I pack everything in. I wonder if I could remember which item was in what bag. Only fancy one I have is for laundry ... that is the one thing I need to hide.

  17. Marnie, I have a request for 375 Quilts of Valor for veterans at an Indian Health Center in OKC....this should keep me busy for the rest of my life. That's about one quilt per month...I'm already falling behind. So, I accept any patriotic -looking orphan blocks.

  22. Guess you have enough suggestions to keep you busy, now! The ginghams look lovely, so bright and cheery. Look forward to seeing what you make with them. One can never have enough bags, just ask my daughter! The more bags I make her, the more she wants! Last winter, she even made a special rack to hang them all on, sew now they adorn her bedroom wall (artistically, of course!).

  23. You could make a quilt out of them and donate it to a charity. I've seen others do that and with a sashing they usually look pretty good despite the blocks all being different. Where are you going travelling to? Huh? hUH?
