Sleep

Have you ever noticed that on the days when you need sleep the most, like the night before a big test, it escapes you? Or the night before a trip, or the night before you're teaching the first lesson of a Bible study, or the night you're just so darned tired you think you'll drop off the minute your head hits the pillow. What is that about? Excitement...anticipation...worry? And what do you do about it?

A couple of nights a week for the last 3 or 4 weeks I've not been able to sleep. Well I think I'm probably sleeping more than I know but my eyes seem to be open more than closed. I get up and try to read but my eyes are too heavy so I turn the light off again only to lay there thinking who knows what. I keep wondering if God is trying to talk to me and I'm not tuning in. Or if something's bothering me that I'm not realizing. Or if this is, horrors to think about, one of the signs of "getting older."

It's not a huge problem and I could take a Tylenol PM or a Benedryl or something but I'd rather not. What do you do when sleep doesn't come?

  1. I take the PM meds, but only one, and only after trying to sleep first. Then I get on the computer and explore until I can't focus. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

  2. When I was a little girl I overheard a conversation between two adults on this same subject. One said when you can't sleep, pray for the missionaries - it works every time! When I can't sleep I often get up and read blogs or read a book for abit and then go back to bed. Doesn't always work but at least I've caught up with blogs or reading a bit. I have to be careful about meds - even Tylenol PM - they 'hang on' for hours and hours the next day and I can't function. ~Adrienne~

  3. Yes, this happened to me last night. I set my alarm for 6:30 to make sure I had enough time here at home before leaving for the workshop at 9:00. I watched the clock go from 10:30 to 1:00. I don't mean I watch it every minute but I checked it now and then. I seemed to me very stressed but I didn't know why. Usually, when this happens, I begin to pray, asking God to clear my mind and relax my body, give me His peace. Not last night. So, its morning now and I can feel the effects of too little sleep.
Getting up and working doesn't help me.

  4. I get out my Ipod and listen to soothing instrumental music. I did this last weekend while at my daughter's. My husband is a light sleeper so this doesn't bother him. Hope that helps!

  5. The same thing happens to me quite a lot. I've never tried any meds, just done without the sleep. I do try to pray while I'm just lying there~and it does usually put me to sleep! (I guess that might be better than sleeping during the sermon on Sunday:)

  6. Og geez, I thought I was going crazy. I can't sleep either. Looks like other women do the same thing. I call it men-o-pause. I lay there and count, or get up and read on the computer.
I do have a cup of hot tea to comfort me before retiring at night.
    Tylenol PM does help too.

  7. Fortunately it doesn't happen to me very often, Marlene, but when it does I take my laptop to bed and catch up on reading blogs.

  8. Horrible thing when it happens Marlene. If I was to get up and start marching about the house I wake me up completely. What I usually do is put on my specs and the bedside lamp and read. I don't bother with putting the book away or turning off the lamp, but just go with the flow and then I'm away with the fairies!

    hope t-h-i-s...........zzzzzzzz

  9. Oh MAN, I never sleep and am so envious of people who can and do!! I take Lunesta every night and it usually works (only occasionally still have a problem). And I USED to sleep SO GOOD! :-(

  10. I have been reading the same book for months at bedtime! By the time I find my place from the night before, I'm sleepy. Read a few minutes, and fall asleep with the light on, and my book falls to the floor. If I watch TV, I stay awake much longer. And if I drink at bedtime, I'm awake in the middle of the night. I am now what my husband has been for 3-4 years...a real pain to sleep with!

  11. Have you tried Sleepy Time Tea by Celestial Seasonings? Completely herbal, and it works. I think they have Sleepy Time Tea double strength on the market now (same company) but I haven't tried that yet. I gave my MIL a box of Sleepy Time tea 12 years ago, when her husband died, and she still drinks a cup at night before retiring. I take it with me on trips, because I have a very hard time sleeping in motels (don't have any idea why). I will drink a cup, knit till my eyes start to cross (or read a bit - nothing too thrilling). I've been known to fall asleep propped up on two pillows with knitting needles clutched in my paws. Hope you find a solution. Oh, and as some of your friend suggested, prayer is good. Except I hate offering a prayer for someone and then falling asleep right in the middle of it. -Megan-

  12. I surf the internet, or play spider solitare or freecell. Freecell is enough to put a person in a coma!

    Hope you start sleeping better!
    be blessed,

  13. I shuffle my way to the kitchen, book in hand, make some hot cocoa, read a bit, then back to bed and sleep like a baby!

  14. When I really cannot sleep, I get up, with my pillow and turn on the TV. TV all so stupidly boring in the middle of the night, it puts me back to sleep on the sofa. Not the best night's sleep, but it DOES get me lulled back into lala land.
