One New Thing

Well, maybe more than one....
Several days ago I showed you a sneak peek at the new thing I was allowing myself to make after finishing a UFO.  That's my goal for the year - One UFO means I can make one new thing but I can't make a new thing until I've completed a UFO.  I might have missed the mark just a small bit but not much.  First of all I finished this top today:
This is Creve Coeur by Dawn Heese for Linen Closet Designs.  I used Moda's Maison de Garance - a layer cake.  I love these fabrics!  You might remember I also made a quilt wrap out of these fabrics a couple of weeks ago.  I'm going to use a dark brown binding but haven't decided how to quilt it or what the backing will be.  Obviously, feathers are called for somewhere.  :)  Maybe the ecru border....

I've also made the first three of Barbara Brackman's Civil War Quilt blocks.
The one at the top is Seven Sisters, on the left is North Star and on the right is Catch Me If You Can.  She has given us Tears for Texas and Kansas Troubles but I haven't made those yet.  I'm hoping to catch up tomorrow.

For those of you following the saga of my grandson, Blake, he is still in the hospital - he's been there since last Tuesday.  They have offered up several diagnoses but I think they are settling on a staph infection in his lymph nodes.  His fever has been down for nearly 48 hours now but night before last he developed an allergy to his medication and is broken out all over his body in a horrible rash.  They've changed the antibiotic but he can't leave the hospital until the rash starts to improve and right now it's only getting worse.  Thank goodness it doesn't itch!  We're hoping for a trip home tomorrow.  They have at least lifted the quarantine so he can now have visitors but I'm not sure he's feeling up to it or if he wants anyone to see him with this rash.  It's that bad. Thank you so much for all the prayers and crossed fingers!

  2. Wow!!! That had to be a tough diagnosis to make. Hope he is home tomorrow and on the road to recovery.

LOVE your Civil War blocks. I need to catch up on mine. I saw the Kansas Troubles out today and I haven't finished my last one yet.

  5. Bless Blake's heart (and little body). I surely hope the change in medication helps, and that the rash will soon be gone and whatever infection is there is on the run. No fun for a little guy to be so sick.

I really like the fabrics in the chicken quilt, and admire the Civil War blocks. I don't quilt, but love quilts and am in awe of those who can do it well!

  9. Thanks for the update on Blake. A teen that lived with us last year had a very similar happening.
I love the chickens and your method of paying yourself for completions. Maybe I need to begin making UFOs!

  10. Wow, I was so hoping and praying that Blake was already on the mend. Prayers continue to go up on his and your behalf.
I had to chuckle when I saw the part of your post on the 7 sisters block. My sister and I took a class on that block a few years ago. We each made one block and were both so frustrated, we've used the remainder of the fabric for something else. Kudos to you for heading down the 7 sisters road! Love the look but can't do them myself!

  11. I am so glad things are improving for Blake who will still be on the prayer list.

Love your choice of fabric line for the chickens - so compliment each other - and yes, feathers for sure.

Glad you are rewarding yourself for completing a project.

  18. Oh, poor Blake, he beats one problem only to get another. I am glad the fever is gone for that had to be the most worrysome.
Know this is hard on you all and I hope he is home soon.

  19. It sure is hard to "sit and stitch" when your grands are sick! I, too, feel like you that I would love to jump in and take over. Once a mom, always a mom! Hopes and prayers that Blake will be better and home really soon. Love your rooster quilt!

  24. Go Blake!! Glad tonight finds him improving!
I love the quilt with our favorite fabric. You must have had some kind of stash in that fabric line!! I still have an entire jelly roll. I'm thinking of making a rail fence quilt with it.
