Help!

If you read my previous post you know that my stove is non-functioning and my new one won't be in for several days. It's too doggone hot to go out to eat so what's a girl to do? My husband is a fabulous cook on the grill but it's 105 in the shade and he's so hot natured that he would be miserable out there if I asked him to grill. I made pimento cheese for sandwiches and we had a chef salad today but I'm running out of ideas! What do you cook in the microwave that's a family favorite? Or in the crockpot? Please help me out here and put some ideas in the comments!

  1. Goodness, Marlene, your story about your stove was so scary. Thank you for making us aware of the hidden danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. I'm so glad you all are okay, even though you're without a stove for a while.

I also want to thank you for the comment you left about my "Small Town, America" post. I loved what you said about raking leaves and making "rooms" to play in ... We used to do things like that, too, and it saddens me to think about a lot of children growing up today who don't really know what it means to "play." They have video games and computers and rarely use their imaginations or creativity.

As far as suggestions for microwavable foods, you can't beat good old bacon and tomato sandwiches this time of year.

Hope you get your new stove soon!

    Sincerely,

    Janie

  3. You can do meatloaf in the microwave. It comes out nice and moist. Easy to do corn on the cob, and of course "baked" potatoes.

Or do BLT sandwiches. Microwave the bacon. Those are great.

  4. Dear Marlene,
Ask Marie, our talented chef blog friend from England. I know that she will have great ideas for you. She posts a new recipe every day and many of them are summer salads and such. She will be able to give you lots of help and I know she would love to do it.

Good luck.... and as you always so sweetly say...blessings, Lura

  5. I love, love, love my crockpot! I use it year-round. Probablly more so in the winter because of the summer grilling.

I have a bunch of recipes I can forward to you if you want. I do everything from roasts to meatballs to italian beef to baked potatoes in it. There isn't much you can't do in a crock pot. In fact tomorrow I think I'm going to throw chicken breasts with some BBQ sauce in the crock pot before I leave for work. I dump it in in the morning, sometimes still forzen, throw some sauce on top and cook it on low all day. I love coming home to food cooking at the end of the day.

  6. Marlene...do you own a George Foreman grill for the inside use? They are great for grilling everything and my family particularly enjoys making all kinds of melted cheese/meat sandwiches. DELICIOUS. Just spray the GF with PAM and off you go. You can also cook just about any meat and you can make queasadillas on it as well. I have a really easy slow cooker recipe for a delicious clam chowder. If you want it, just leave me a note on my blog. :) I hope your stove gets running soon. Don't you hate it when your kitchen isn't functioning? It always make me want to eat out!

  8. Beef tip sandwiches in the crock pot. Beef roast, onion soup mix, brown gravy mix... add a hard roll and some cheddar.. YUM!

  9. Pork roast, throw it in the crockpot with some garlic, onion, seasonings and a tidge of water. Throw in some liquid smoke. Cook all day long, take out and shred, return to the pot and add bbq sauce, serve on buns. This freeezes quite well, microwaves well or can be reheated in the crockpot. I like to throw some taco seasoning and peach preserves in when I put the sauce in. Microwave some corn-on-the-cob and you are good to go! Potatoes bake quite well in a crockpot, too, and you can top them with just about anything. Much love - Raquel XO

    Ditto to the BLT suggestions.

Use crockpot for chicken breasts to make chicken salad....a fav of ours and it's a "cool" dish on hot days.

Thankful that you discovered the gas before something really bad happened.

  11. Hi Marlene,

I have made pot roast using a crock pot. Basically, I cook it on low overnight with the roast, a can of cream of mushroom, a can of water, and an envelope of French Onion Soup mix.

Hope you get your stove soon!

  12. Marlene, I use my crock pot all the time in the summer. It just makes sense, with the heat and all. I just bang whatever I want to eat in there, even roast chicken. E-mail me and I'll e-mail you back with some lovely tasty recipes. ok? mariealicejoan at aol dot com
