Kicking and Screaming...

I love gadgets.  Love.  Them.  I want every new edition of every gadget I have whether I need it or not.  I don't necessarily get it; I just want it.

My husband...not so much.  He hates anything new.  He'd love to find a cell phone he likes and  keep it until he dies.  But of course you and I both know phones don't last that long so he changes phones when forced, but then I have to drag him kicking and screaming.

I've had an IPhone for about a year now.  I love it.  Love.  It.  He has a small Pantech.  He hates it.  Hates.  It.  No matter what he does it keeps going to Facebook and Twitter just whenever it wants to.  He's never been on Facebook or Twitter in his life.  He still thinks Facebook is a photo album and Twitter is what birds do.  We've taken it back to the store at least twice, maybe three times.  They couldn't fix it.  We even called Pantech and did what they told us, which fixed it.  It didn't go to Facebook or Twitter any more.  Except it did call 911.  Five times in a row while he had it locked and off and was sitting in a classroom supervising an intern teacher.  The nice 911 folks left him a voicemail and told him they knew he was okay because they could hear him talking so they assumed it was a "pocket call."  You and I might name it a "purse call."  You know, like when your phone dials someone and you didn't do it so you assume your purse laid on it and pushed a button or something?  That hasn't happened to you?  We changed the settings back to their origin because we decided Facebook and Twitter were better than 911.  The problem with that is that when it visits those sites it's using data and it would stay on for hours and we were being charged!

So finally today, after the children and I had listened to his continuous griping until we I couldn't take it any more, we went in to get him a new phone.  The kids talked him into taking my IPhone and I would get the new IPhone 4S.  Sweet.

We've spent a couple of hours now, well I've spent a couple of hours now, saving data, switching data from my old phone to my new phone, downloading ITunes to his computer, downloading data to his "new" IPhone, etc.  But it is totally worth it.  Totally.  Did you know you can just push a button, ask out loud "where is the nearest Pizza Hut" or "what's the square root of 5,997, 235" and it will tell you?  Not that I need either of those pieces of information, but you never know when I might.  I can also tell it to text my husband to bring home milk and it will type it out for me and send it!  I'm in heaven.  I wonder if it can figure the yardage I need for the backing of a quilt.  I wonder if it can tell me the ingredients I need for coconut cream pie when I'm at the grocery store and can't remember.  I wonder if it has a magic potion for losing weight.  I wonder if there's a real person out there somewhere who's going to hate to see my name pop up with another stupid question.

  1. There is a quilting app that helps you with yardage for borders and backings

  2. OK, I am jealous now. My husband is the same way. Funny because he is an engineer, and he works on cell phone systems. He just replaced a probably five year old phone with an android. His company would have replaced it three years ago for free. My six year old phone is next. How can I make it his idea to get me an iPhone???? Thing is, we are not excited about adding data to my plan, so we drag our feet.

  4. When my husband's phone calls someone, he says, 'Oh, I must have butt-dialed you!' =-)
So happy about your new phone. We have blackberrys and right now, they are good enough for us. Enjoy your new toy!

  5. How fun. We both like gadgets here and have just bought a new one. A big one. We bought a new Edge. It's a computer on wheels. We gave our 2008 Edge to our daughter. Now our car can talk to her car. That's exactly what happened today. She called and said, "This is my car talking. Is that your car answering?" Yes, it was. We are all happy. ;)

  6. Hi Friend! I am much more like your DH! The stress of figuring out new technology is almost not worth it to me. I need someone to walk me through it the first dozen times. Maybe that is what he needs and since you are familiar with your old phone, you can do that! Congrats on your NEW phone! Cha-ching! ♥♥♥

  9. My daughter just got the 4S yesterday and she is in love with I-Phone all over again. By the way, I have an awesome quilting app on my Samsung that I am sure you can get for Iphone. It is a quilter's calculator that tells you exactly how much batting and backing you need, how many strips to cut for binding, both straight grain and bias, etc. I LOVE it! I have checked it against my old fashioned method of getting the calculator out and it is perfect every time.

  10. I'm finally going to join the smart phone world myself this weekend. I'm not as bad as your hubby, I'm not going kicking and screaming, but with our corporate discount, my cell bill is less than $40 a month. It is hard to give that up.

  11. I think we are married to twins. Bob's phone would probably qualify for an antique cell phone. It doesn't even have a camera and he loves it. I don't have an I Phone, our budget won't go that far I don't think. I can get a new one in May and I will, and Bob will take over mine. That will bug him.

  12. My husband & I are still in the dark ages with no cell phones. He's 50, I'm 46 & we have a 19 yr old son. We talked about getting a phone for me just today - we talk about it occasionally.

My son has a cell phone but really dh & I have no interest at all in getting one. It just seems like one more thing I'd have to take care of/deal with that I don't really need.

  13. I'm afraid I am a bit like your DH. I have a smart phone that is smarter than I am and can hardly figure it out. BUT... I have an Ipod touch and wish I could magically change it to an I-phone.

  16. True story...My husband makes cell phone chips for phones. Yes, he does. He is very smart. He hates gadgets and computers. They frustrate him. Me, I LOVE them! I am the IT person in our house. Me. No college education, just love to learn and figure things out. He had a smart phone for one week. He took it back and said he wants a phone that he can make calls with and text. Made me laugh. Now, if he had gotten an iPhone like I did, I could have helped him, but he didn't. I LOVE my iPhone. L.O.V.E. IT! Lots....And lots....

    Yes, I do....

  17. My husband and I have identical phones - no fancy stuff. Our daughters are after us to get the "jazzy" phones like you have...we'll see. My oldest daughter "butt" calls me - and the tune she installed on MY phone when she calls is "Go Cubs Go, Go Cubs Go, Hey Chicago what do you say - the Cubs are gonna win today" - I HATE the Cubs - I'm a SOX fan! And then she isn't even on the phone after I have to listen to THAT song! lol lol lol

  18. What a delightful story, though I know that living with a non-technological hubby can be challenging. But my, what a lemon for a phone he had! So glad it worked out for you to be on the receiving side of this new arrangement. I'm hoping for the same treatment once we get settled in Florida - new phone, a tablet ( all I-somethings, of course) - that talks to a super-duper HDEFG-TV. I can dream, can't I?

  19. My sweetheart and yours are cut from the same fabric! He wants his old flip phone with no gadgets, bells or whistles. I, on the other hand, want it all. Love my SmartPhone and apps. Think it should be appliqued to my wrist!

  20. Oh.... I am envious... even though I shouldn't be... I can't help it. How I would love an iPhone. I'm lucky I can text my kids.My hubby is like yours. My phone has a key board but is bare bones compared to yours. However, I am so happy for you. Isn't modern technology amazing!!!

We are still adjusting to being back on land after our great cruise to Hawaii. I had to make our own bed today and no one brought us room service breakfast. Life is tough!!!!! Oh well, it is good to be home. Why don't you come and cruise with us next year. I think I will plan an Alaskan land & cruise group.

Have fun with your new phone. Hugs, Lura

  21. This is so funny!! We just went and replaced my husband's old, old laptop that finally died. He griped and griped for months about that computer and his phone!! We have the same phone, but I'm sure his is cursed. Next on the list is an iphone for him. Sooner rather than later; I'm tired of the complaining!! LOLOL

  22. I have had Macs since 1982. I would LOVE an iPhone but only At&T services this area & they forgot this little hidden par of OK. My Android with US Cellular works most of the time. Let's see how long it takes me to send this post today.

  25. My husband is the main gadget-lover in this household, but he has no desire for a smart phone. I, however, got mine only last summer and now I want the newest iPhone after reading about yours! LOL

  26. Yep, like many others who commented on your delightful post, my sweet hubby is also smart-phone-resistant. I got myself an iPhone over a year ago and simply LOVE it. My GPS app is a marriage-saver, and Facetime has connected me to my kids and grandkids (all iPhone and/or iPad users). Then there's the quilting apps and the night sky astronomy apps and...well, I admit I'm joined at the hip with my technology! Funny thing is, sweet hubby relies on MY technology as much as I do!

I have a smart phone, but it's not as smart as that one. However, it's still smarter than me.

  29. Congratss on the iPhone upgrade!
I love mine too. I've had it a few months now.

You need to ask Siri where to hide a body. The answers are hilarious.

  30. Love it. I waiting until the end of the year (translated into after my daughter's wedding is over) to get the new iPhone.

I've been missing reading all the posts and played catch up today. I always smile while reading your blog.
